It's a bit cold and dreary in Oklahoma today (but no snow - thank goodness). So it seems the perfect day to post this hot cocoa recipe. I recently sent some of bags of this good stuff to friends and family for Christmas along with some homemade peppermint marshmallows.
I store my hot cocoa mix in a glass canister right next to my flour, sugar, etc. The mug is one that I drew for Emily (it's one of those 'create your own' mugs from Starbucks) |
When I was a kid, we never had hot cocoa from a pre-made mix you can buy at the super market. I can remember my mom always making it in a huge green plastic tupperware bowl... mixing it all together and then storing it in a canister during the winter. The recipe below is not my mom's, but I guess I should ask her for it so I can enjoy that childhood favorite again.
Hot Cocoa
2 cups dry non-fat milk powder
2 cups powdered sugar
1 1/2 cups cocoa powder (I use Hershey's - a little tribute to my home state)
1 cup powdered non-dairy creamer
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 cup white chocolate chips (optional)
1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips (optional)
Mix all ingredients in a large bowl until evenly combined. You could opt for all miniature chocolate chips, but I think the combination of white and semi-sweet is great!
To make the hot cocoa, add about 3 tablespoons to a mug. Pour in 1 cup of hot water or hot milk. Stir until all of the chocolate is melted.
Enjoy!
mom made her hot chocolate right before I got the Christmas package from you. Its different than yours for sure but both are good. My dogs got into the rest of mine and enjoyed it too!
